The Qipao has a rich and specific cultural history originating in 1920s Shanghai. Shanghai in that era was a city of radical cosmopolitanism, of jazz clubs, silk merchants, revolutionary politics and a fashion culture that was synthesising East and West. The Qipao was a synthesis made wearable. 

By the 1940s and 1950s it had become the defining dress of Chinese femininity. The Qipao frames the body with the high mandarin collar, diagonal closure and fitted line from shoulder to hem.
